Deep in the Oregon Cascade Range, UO researchers made a surprising discovery: a huge underground aquifer with three times the capacity of Lake Mead. In an era of increasing drought caused by global climate change, this water source holds implications for scientists and policymakers, and also for volcanic hazards in the region.

During wildfire season, every second counts. To speed detection, the Oregon Hazards Lab designed and built a fleet of portable, lightweight wildfire camera kits. Public land management agencies can quickly deploy the cameras to monitor fires as they ignite. These mobile units supplement over 70 HazLab stationary wildfire cameras already in place around the state.
How do we shrink the carbon footprint of the steel industry? Electrochemists at the UO have pioneered a novel solution. Bypassing fossil fuels and blast furnaces, they’ve created iron with a chemical process that uses saltwater and iron oxide. Their breakthrough holds huge promise for producing cleaner, greener iron metal at scale.
Thanks to UO researchers’ help, forests are growing back healthier in the wake of forest fires. To attract pollinators to burned and clearcut areas, the Environmental Leadership Program seeded native plants over several seasons. The effort has been a wild success, attracting more and healthier bees each year.

Advance notice of an earthquake can save lives. In partnership with the US Geological Survey, the Oregon Hazards Lab sends alerts to 4.2 million Oregonians via the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System.
